My name is Brian Whitens and I was born and raised in the Upper Peninsula. I’ve been filming and producing outdoor related television shows for nearly the last decade. Our television show “Real Outdoors” has been airing nationwide for the past 3 years featuring shows based on fishing, hunting and travel throughout the U.S. and Canada.  The idea of doing television began years ago with the thought of producing a show exclusively about the Upper Peninsula. That urge has never gone away and finally the time has come to make it a reality.
I began by talking with TV6 about potential airtime.  Thats where it all changed.  Timing was such that my search for airtime coincided with the temporary departure of Buck LeVasseur, host of TV6's popular show of 30+ years....DISCOVERING.  Long story short....I am the temporary host of Discovering until Buck's return.

Upon Buck's return I expect to pick up where I left off with Real Outdoors.  The
new version Real Outdoors will be called “Real Outdoors-U.P. Edition”.  I am very excited to have the opportunity to film and produce a show in and about the area I love the most, my own backyard, the Upper Peninsula. My travels have taken me to some spectacular destinations over the past several years. These travels have helped me to better appreciate all that we have here in the Upper Peninsula. The pristine waters big and small offering a variety of fishing opportunities rarely matched. Lush remote forests strewn with two-rut backwoods roads and hunting possibilities many only dream of. The four seasons each with its own set of unique activities. Small towns, proud friendly towns made up of proud friendly people, all with some story to tell. That’s what this show is about, all of that and more. Its about hunting and fishing, camping, travel, destinations, adventure, events, U.P. products and of course, the interesting people of the Upper Peninsula. From the largest of the Great Lakes to the smallest of inland brook trout streams, from the Keewanaw to the Garden Peninsula, from Drummond Island to Ironwood, join us and experience things that can be found only here in the Upper Peninsula.
